If you want to diet to lose weight there are plenty of plans out there to help you do it. Most of them give you rules to follow that help select the food you eat, when you eat, how you eat and a lot of other behavior modifying approaches all designed to help you. The problem is when you stop dieting you gain the weight back. How do you get the weight off, but more importantly how do you then keep it off?

There are four key elements to being successful with weight loss. Drink water, exercise, be honest, have resolve. That’s really it. You can be successful in any plan you choose if you will enact the following four easy to understand but hard to do principles and steps.

First, Drink water. Drink water rather than diet soda, tea or other beverages. The body reacts to the caffeine and chemicals as if it is dehydrating so it stores water in fatty tissues. When you properly hydrate your body doesn’t see itself as dehydrating so it doesn’t store water. The end result is you will lose between six and ten pounds in the first week from water retention.

Second, you must exercise. Next time you read an add or watch an advert about a plan to diet to lose weight catch the fine print. They almost always mention proper diet and exercise. Exercise causes the body to need more calories, which it has stored in the fat. It gets this energy by converting the stored calories in the fat of the body to energy. Thus you lose weight.

Third, you must be honest about the 1500 calorie diet plan you choose and how you stick to it. No diet to lose weight is going to work if you don’t actually do it. You may be convincing yourself, your coach, your spouse, or accountability partner you’re actually doing what your supposed to but the scale is going to reveal the truth. Ultimately, you are only hurting yourself because you are not going to lose the weight. Don’t cheat if you truly want to get rid of the weight. If you aren’t going to stick to the plan then don’t waste your time and the time of others by starting.

Finally, you must have resolve or you won’t be able to pass up the temptations. If you aren’t sick and tired of being over weight, out of shape, etc you won’t stick to the plan you select. It’s as simple as that. You must want to get thin or you won’t reach your goal, and you should set a goal.

No matter what plan you select if you drink water, add exercise, honestly follow the plan and truly want to succeed you will. You can do it. You can diet to lose weight if you are willing to make the behavioral changes in your life to foster that success. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen over time. Why not make the time to start now? In the long run you’ll be glad you did.
